NewRoad Guide to Transitioning Dog Food

NewRoad Guide to Transitioning Dog Food

There are many reasons for a person to consider changing their dog's food. Looking to attain improvements in performance, appearance, health, and behavior are all great justifications for making a switch. Here are the top 6 reasons people join the NewRoad pack:

  • You value quality food—specifically human-grade, non-GMO, and freshly baked to order.

  • Your current dog food brand had a recall or you don't trust the safety of the ingredients or processes.

  • Your dog experiences food allergies or sensitivities and needs a recipe with a unique protein source.

  • Your dog is getting older and they need a specially formulated recipe to help them age gracefully.

  • Your puppy is old enough to switch to an adult recipe.

  • Your dog needs some help losing weight.

We recommend transitioning from your current food to your NewRoad recipe over a 7 to 10 day period. If your dog or puppy is particularly sensitive, you may want to extend this transition time.

Changing to a new food without thoughtfully transitioning ('going cold turkey') or switching too quickly can result in symptoms such as diarrhea and upset stomach.

To avoid tummy trouble, start by mixing in a small amount of your pup's NewRoad recipe with their current food. Each day slowly increase the ratio of NewRoad food while decreasing the amount of your dog's current food.

It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for your pup's digestive tract to properly adapt to their new food.

Switching to a new food that has the same ingredients as the current one but minor differences in fat or protein content should only take a few days. Switching to a food with significantly different ingredients or different protein and fat levels may require a longer transition period before your pup's digestive tract becomes totally adjusted to the change.

Each dog and puppy is unique and may take less than 7 days or more than 14 days to fully transition. If your pup usually has a sensitive tummy, plan on a longer transition period. Be sure to monitor and adjust your schedule accordingly.
